Now that the months of slush, snow, and frigid temperatures are over, and spring is in the air, it’s time to rethink your skincare routine. Winter is gone, taking with it dreariness and itchy, dry skin. And although you’ve spent these months layering balms, serums, and oils, the warmer air, and increased humidity will mean your skin will encounter a shock. So, what should you do now? Here are some helpful hints to help you transition your skincare routine from winter to spring.

Moisturize for Warmer Temperatures

Now that it’s spring, you should choose lighter moisturizers like a water-based or hyaluronic acid formula as the temperatures rise. During the colder months, our skin tends to hold moisture with less need for protection. Although a moisturizer with an SPF 30 is excellent when it’s cold, we stress the importance of a sunscreen separate from your makeup, and lotion that’s at least SPF 50.

Contrary to popular belief, your skin requires exfoliation when it’s extra-dry. Sloughing off dead skin cells and unclogging pores is paramount for healthy, glowing skin. Unfortunately, many try to do this at home with harsh scrubs and over-the-counter peels. But spring is the best time to schedule a medspa treatment. Here are the remedies we recommend this time of year.

This aesthetic treatment can resolve cosmetic skin issues with an added collagen boost. A gentle stream of particles will exfoliate damaged and dry skin to reveal a glowing, fresh skin layer almost immediately.  Microdermabrasion gently vacuums away exfoliated cells and skin particles in sensitive areas, including the face, neck, chest, and arms.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation

Laser Genesis is an advanced YAG laser treatment for skin conditions like large pores, scars, wrinkles, uneven texture, and redness. You will enjoy a rejuvenated, healthy appearance with radiant skin to enhance your facial beauty for those springtime events.

Vivace Microneedling

Vivace microneedling combines radiofrequency and microneedling to deliver tighter skin and trigger new collagen production.

Our customized facials will transition your skin by restoring, revitalizing, and nourishing it to a beautiful presence. Our aesthetician will analyze your skin to recommend which of our facials is best suited for you. It’s also a great way to spend a relaxing hour or two.

Chemical Peels

This time-tested skincare treatment can treat your skin at various layers by removing the old and welcoming in the new. Various depths of chemical peels can resolve many skin flaws like wrinkles, scarring, hyperpigmentation, and uneven tone or texture.

Medical-Grade Treatments for Your Home

Scar treatment is not a simple process. Multiple factors need consideration before choosing the best approach. Surgeons and skincare professionals require detailed information to determine the type of scar needing treatment and the approach necessary to soften its visibility. The severity of scar tissue, size and depth of the wound, and the patient’s age and current health status all get taken into account before choosing which procedure will deliver the best results.

Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component that supports the skin by attracting and retaining moisture. Many dermal fillers incorporate this sugar to add plumpness to voids and hollows in facial areas. These injectables are also suitable to soften fine lines and wrinkles. You can reduce the appearance of acne scarring by having dermal fillers injected under the skin tissue. These injections will plump up the skin adjacent to the scar and diminish its visibility.

You should note that dermal fillers are a temporary fix to facial blemishes, as the body will absorb the product after a few months to two years. Additional sessions can continue the results until you decide on a more permanent approach.

Laser Surgery Treatment

For patients interested in taking a more permanent approach, laser treatments could fit the bill. This treatment requires a consultation with a skin evaluation and physical check-up. Then, Dr. Dreyfuss can recommend the proper laser treatment for skin type and scar reduction. A laser treatment will transform the scar tissue so it can blend into the adjacent skin and become less obvious. These treatments use advanced technology that can provide outstanding results when performed by certified health care professionals. Multiple sessions may be necessary.

This straightforward approach removes the damaged skin surface, allowing for the fresh, supple, underlying skin to emerge. Various treatments can accomplish removing the dead and damaged skin layer while promoting the body’s natural healing process. They include the following.

Chemical Peels

As the name indicates, a chemical peel will use chemical compounds to remove scar tissue. This approach sloughs off damaged skin tissue to reveal a new skin layer. There will be some redness and irritation during the peeling process.

We can boost collagen production with a gentle stream of tiny particles that exfoliate the outer layer of damaged skin while providing a fresh, radiant skin glow. Because microdermabrasion removes small amounts of skin, results are immediate. Treatment sites include the face, neck, chest, back, arms, and hands.

Vivace Microneedling

The establishment of the advanced Vivace Microneedling with radiofrequency promotes skin rejuvenation to a higher level in the Chicago area. This innovative procedure is 100% natural, linking two established technologies into one procedure. Patients see improvement in anti-aging and the reduction of scarring, wrinkles, stretch marks, and more.

If you want to address scarring resulting from injury, acne, or surgery, schedule a consultation with Dr. Dreyfuss today.

Chicago winters, biting chill, dreary rain, and breathtaking winds not only bring down  our mood, but they can wreak havoc on our skin health as well. The dark days of these colder months can cause our skin to become dry, red, flaky, and inflamed. But how can you keep your complexion luminous and plump throughout the winter?

Here we reveal tried-and-true practices that will keep your complexion healthy and radiant all winter long.

1. Use SPF

Winter is not the time to stop using sunscreen; in fact, it may be the time to use it more. Although temperatures drop significantly, the sun still shines and can cause extreme damage to the skin. If there is snow out, it will reflect UV rays, much like sand on the beach. We recommend a reliable sunscreen with at least 30 SPF on exposed skin like the face, neck, and hands. This practice will reduce dry skin and fight the effects of aging.

2: Hydrate

Maintaining your water intake during the winter months is essential to your health. During the warmer months, we drink plenty of water, but as the temperatures drop, it’s easy to neglect hydration. Although perspiration decreases and losing moisture may not be as much of a concern, you should still be drinking at least a couple of liters a day.

3. Switch Up Your Moisturiser

Although increasing water intake is a good move, it won’t by itself save your skin from drying out during the winter. Freezing temperatures can cause much damage, so finding winter skincare products is a must. You should look to facial oils and hydrating serums that amp up your moisture levels and maintain your beautiful skin.

4.   Exfoliate

Exfoliation during the winter months is equally important to both body and face. Many people experience flaky skin during the colder months, and the best way to eliminate this dead skin is to exfoliate. You should exfoliate to increase skin health at least once a week, but don’t overdo it. Too much exfoliation may cause its own problems.

A dry body brush is a great way to exfoliate before you bathe or shower. Long sweeping motions over your torso, legs, and arms will remove dry skin and keep the skin’s circulation active to increase blood flow to the skin and improve its overall health.

5. Dress accordingly.

This tip is critical—although painfully obvious. Although we tend to dress to impress, don’t let our fashion get in the way of wearing layers when it’s cold. Gloves, scarfs, long sleeves, and leggings, as well as sweaters, thermal undergarments, and coats, will protect your skin from the harsh winter environment.

As men and women age, our facial aesthetics become more of a challenge with wrinkles and fine lines, drooping eyelids, crow’s feet and volume loss around the cheeks. Another under-emphasized cosmetic issue is a double chin. Whether weight fluctuations or genetics, submental fat beneath the jawline can make any patient look old and overweight. Not the best appearance as we move closer toward the holidays and those unexpected pictures taken by everyone with a handy smartphone.

Fortunately, there are multiple cosmetic treatments which can eliminate submental fat to deliver a sleek, slender and youthful neck just in time for your fall and winter festivities.

Neck Liposuction

This surgical solution will enhance your appearance by delivering an attractive frame to your facial beauty. It is an effective procedure designed to help create a natural-looking, beautiful neck line with patients who deal with mild amounts of excess fat and skin laxity. Neck liposuction gently removes fat from the neck area and can stimulate collagen remodeling and skin tightening in the months following surgery. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Dreyfuss uses advanced techniques to slim and shape your neck to a graceful contour providing your facial appearance with overall balance and beauty.

Patients with mild to moderate submental fat and excess skin in the neck area are suitable candidates for neck liposuction. They want to improve their lower facial profile and jawline definition.

CoolSculpting® offers a non-invasive, non-surgical fat reduction treatment which literally freezes away the fat. This state-of-the-art treatment mechanism is suitable for multiple treatment areas including the neck. With a special attachment, CoolSculpting® targets submental fat below the jawline and kills excess fat cells without affecting adjacent tissues. The body will naturally dispose of these cells leaving you with a slender and sexy neck line within a few weeks after the procedure.

The treatment lasts for less than an hour and is so comfortable you can respond to emails, read, or stream your favorite shows during the treatment session. Some of our patients even take a nap.

Since 2015, Kybella® has been a revolutionary fat dissolver in the world of nonsurgical aesthetic treatments. Many in the cosmetic industry are saying it’s the biggest cosmetic breakthrough since Botox®.

Before Kybella®’s approval, there were few options to deal with submental fat other than liposuction and wearing a turtleneck. But now, this non-surgical procedure makes it possible to rid yourself of an unsightly double chin and achieve an elegant, and sleek neckline without incisions or downtime.

Kybella® is a formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the human body which aids in the absorption and breakdown of fat. Because it is not animal-based, allergic reactions are not likely.

These injections are designed to remove moderate-to-severe convexity associated with a double chin. Kybella® is a safe, in-office treatment performed by Dr. Dreyfuss himself at our surgical facility conveniently located in Orland Park. Before the treatment, we apply an aesthetic cream if necessary. Then, using a special grid, Dr. Dreyfuss will carefully draw the boundaries for the injections on the treatment area.

Next, he will use the grid marked on your chin as a guide to deliver the fat reducing injections with precision. The procedure is straightforward and simple, taking about 20 minutes to complete.

Kybella® destroys the underlying fat cells under the jawline to remove your double chin. Once destroyed these fat cells do not return or regenerate. They are gone and gone for good. Although weight gain can increase the size, it will never alter the contour.

Every patient we treat at our state-of-the-art Medical Spa has individual skin concerns which require a custom skincare regimen. With age, and through different stages of life, your skin transitions to different phases as well. It is crucial to have a relationship with an aesthetic medical professional with the expertise and experience to provide you with the procedures to help you pass the years with grace. This crucial factor in anti-aging medicine is why board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. David Dreyfuss, performs all nonsurgical procedures at our surgical clinic in Orland Park.

As a plastic surgeon, he has the training and experience to provide treatments and products to enhance your skin’s health and appearance aestheticians don’t have. He not only has a full arsenal of treatment regimens to ensure your best skin ever, but he can also recommend home products to help enhance the appearance of your skin. Here are some of his recommendations for each stage of your life:

Your Thirties

Although skin care is important to teens and young adults as well, when you reach thirty, it’s time to get very serious about your skincare. Use a facial cleanser when you rise in the morning and before you go to bed at night. This practice will be gentle on your skin and will avoid pre-mature wrinkles, lines, and blemishes.

Also, wear sunscreen! Nothing adds to wrinkles and fine lines like sun and wind exposure, and wearing sunscreen daily with an SPF of 30 or higher will ensure you have the proper protection. Dr. Dreyfuss can recommend one with the proper blend of moisture and antioxidants. He can also recommend a topical cream or serum to use at night with the proper levels of AHA, retinol, and moisturizer.

A personalized facial every six to eight weeks is highly recommended to hydrate the skin and clean the pores. Microdermabrasion is also a great treatment for exfoliation to provide a polished and refined appearance.

If you start noticing some lines around your eyes or on your forehead, Dr. Dreyfuss may recommend Botox® to get a jump start on your anti-aging regimen.

Your Forties

Now is the time to step up your skin care treatment to meet the ever-advancing onset of aging skin. Dr. Dreyfuss will suggest more advanced products and procedures which are appropriate for this time in your life. With proper skin evaluation and a stronger treatment regimen, you will find your skin maintaining its youthful glow or reverse the effects of aging.

Dermal fillers like Juvederm® and Restylane® are optimal treatments to ensure your facial appearance has enough volume for a smooth texture with fewer wrinkles and lines. Botox can also be utilized for effective treatment of wrinkles and lines about the eyes and on the forehead.

Your Fifties

To maintain proper skin care and keep you looking wonderful, this decade in your life requires consistent and proper treatments. While maintaining a daily skin cleansing regimen and using daily sunscreen as mentioned earlier, you will probably also require products which trigger new cell growth and regeneration of elastin and collagen, the proteins which provide support and skin tightness. Dr. Dreyfuss will recommend products to ensure you receive the proper nutrients your skin requires; plus, he might also suggest treatments appropriate to keep your facial appearance young and vibrant.

Ultherapy® is an advanced skincare treatment which is FDA-approved for the face, neck, chin, décolletage, and brow. This non-invasive ultra-sound procedure stimulates collagen production to offer a gradual skin tightening and resolve wrinkles, lines, and folds.

Laser Genesis is a laser treatment used for skin rejuvenation at this critical age. Skin issues like wrinkles, uneven texture, scars, redness, and large pores can all be resolved with Laser Genesis, giving you healthy and rejuvenated skin.

Your Sixties and Beyond

Now your skin will need more protection than at any other time in your life. Hydration and sunscreen are critical to ensuring optimal health and appearance. Gentle cleansers in the morning and at night should be maintained as well as sunscreen application daily.

Hyaluronic acid fillers will also keep your face full and plump while easing wrinkles and lines. Regular facials will ensure your skin will receive proper hydration and an infusion of necessary nutrients.

Facial surgery is also a possibility at any age to shave a decade off your appearance and ensure your graceful aging process.

Summer is almost here and with it comes warmer weather. This temperature rise means you’ll be exchanging your winter woolens for your crop tops, summer shorts, and bikinis. It may be wonderful to think you’ll be able to get some sun on your skin; but is your summer body ready to flaunt?

Here at Dreyfuss Plastic Surgery, we see an uptick in patients looking to get summer ready for the events on their calendar. Here are the most popular procedures they choose:

Liposuction is the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the Chicago area and around the United States. It is the least invasive plastic surgery available and has the shortest recovery period. Liposuction is designed to eliminate the stubborn fat that diet and exercise can’t seem to resolve and help you look your best this summer.

The procedure involves tiny incisions that enable a thin suction tool to remove stubborn fat cells from target areas. It is not a weight loss procedure but rather a body contouring treatment, and patients should be close to their optimal weight before considering the surgery.

What could be more satisfying than freezing away unwanted bulges to prepare for the warm weather that approaches? Coolsculpting uses advanced fat freezing technology to create a sculpted body outline designed to turn heads. The non-surgical, non-invasive procedure is a perfect alternative to liposuction for patients with less fat issues or who shy from surgery.

CoolSculpting is a comfortable way to eliminate fat pads. Many of our patients bring a book, watch Netflix or take a nap during treatment.

Breast Surgery

Breast surgeries like augmentation or a lift are designed to provide youthful, vivacious breasts which add confidence and body self-esteem. Breast augmentation brings balance, firmness and optimal size and shape to the bust line while a breast lift will elevate the breasts to a perky youthful position.

Brazilian Butt Lift

This procedure lifts your tush so you can feel sexy in the sleekest dresses and tightest jeans. Your summer wardrobe will not include loose-fitting clothing designed to hide what you have, but rather the most stylish outfits for summer wear.

The Brazilian butt lift will increase projection and improve your overall body profile making you look feminine and sexy.

Cellfina is an FDA approved cellulite treatment product with long-lasting, clinically proven results.  The traditional methods of radiofrequency, laser treatment, lotions and topical creams have had sporadic results at best.

This in-office cellulite treatment takes about a half hour and provides initial results within three days, gradually improving over two to three months.

Laser Hair Removal

Prepare for this summer with the need for little hair removal maintenance. The ProWave laser provides permanent hair removal results so you can reveal a soft, smooth skin every time you go to the beach or wear your favorite shorts.

Instead of shaving, tweezing, waxing or plucking, try this revolutionary treatment for effective but gentle hair removal for the chin, back, bikini line, legs or underarms. Patient results vary, and multiple treatments may be necessary for permanent results.

Skin Rejuvenation

Dreyfuss Plastic Surgery offers Laser Genesis, an innovative Yag laser treatment for non-ablative skin rejuvenation. This procedure resolves common skin issues like uneven texture, redness, large pores, scars, and wrinkles providing a healthy skin glow.

It delivers consistent high energy pulses to skin tissue, heating, and targeting multiple skin layers. You will enjoy the relative comfort of the procedure with best results after a series of five treatment sessions.

Laser Genesis is available for all skin types but ideal for light to medium skin tones.

So, whether you’re feeling overworked or over stressed, or just want to look refreshed for the holidays, Dreyfuss Plastic Surgery has a variety of non-invasive procedures that will help you feel your absolute best!

About Botox

You’ve heard about Botox, but what do you really know about this wildly popular treatment?

One of the most in-demand, anti-aging procedures, Botox is both safe and reliable, and can help with those undesired lines and wrinkles around your mouth and eyes. With just a few simple injections, years can be reduced from your face. Even better, no downtime is needed! That’s right, your Christmas shopping won’t be put on hold afterwards; you can resume your daily activities immediately!

A Botox treatment generally takes just ten minutes, but can last up to four months!

About Laster Hair Removal

Do you suffer from unwanted body hair? Luckily, there is a technique that can take care of this problem, and it doesn’t involve the hassle or inconvenience of shaving, waxing, or electrolysis. Laser hair removal can address area that include the bikini line, back, chin, underarms, legs, and even more!

The process is simple: a specific type of infrared light is applied to hair follicles in areas that are plagued by unwanted hair. The procedure can be tailored to provide the best possible results, depending on the patients individual wants and needs. Better yet, large areas can be treated rather quickly and sufficiently. And while you may experience some stinging, there are a variety of methods and cooling devices to help minimize your discomfort.

About Microdermabrasion

Unfortunately, many of us suffer from sun damages and wrinkles – it’s all part of getting older. Yet, we now have available and affordable options at our disposable to help us mask out age. Even better, many of these options are quick and non-invasive.

Microdermabrasion is a skin renewal procedure, which requires no recovery or downtime. During the process, collagen is boosted throughout the face, while a gentle stream of tiny particles exfoliates the outer layer of the skin, resulting in a fresh, glowing appearance. Yet, other areas can be treated, too, such as the chest, neck, back, arms, and hands. This holiday season, say “goodbye” to wrinkles!

About Latisse

Sometimes, we’re not born with everything that we want. Specifically, have you always yearned for longer eyelashes? If so, then Lastisse is for you!

Latisse is the first FDA-approved eyelash enhancement drug that allows patients to grow long, beautiful eyelashes. Formulated solely for cosmetic use, Latisse is developed from bimatoprost, an ingredient used to help treat glaucoma. The process is easy: you brush a solution along the lash line, and it maintains the growth phase of your eyelashes, all the while making your lashes thicker, longer, and even darker.

Latisse is available only by prescription, and requires patients to be both healthy, and have no associated allergies.

About Dermal Fillers

Looking for methods to reduce those wrinkles? Dermal fillers can help rejuvenate your skin, and are generally made from substances that can be naturally found in the body. Safe and reliable, dermal fillers are non-invasive, require no recovery or downtime once injected, and only take minutes to administer.

You can choose from a wide variety of options, including Restylane, Radiesse, and Juvederm. If you’re unsure which is best for you and your particular needs, the professionals at Dreyfuss Plastic Surgery can help you find the best suited treatment.

About Titan Skin Tightening

This non-invasive treatment device can successfully tighten your skin and improve its tone around the jawline, chin, neck, arms, thighs, and stomach. Ideal for those who have loose or hanging skin on their body, a special hand piece is used to administer infrared light energy, which selectively heats the dermis and collagen beneath the skin’s surface.

Are you experiencing any skin laxity due to childbirth, liposuction, or weight loss? If so, this procedure could work for you. Better yet, Titan doesn’t require any downtime. You can get treatment during your lunch hour, or while taking a break from holiday shopping, and then instantly resume your activities. Looking good has never been this convenient!

The winter season can be drying and damaging to our skin with the cooler temperatures and windy weather. Dr. Dreyfuss created this infographic that includes the top 10 beauty tips to look radiant all winter long. Keep your glowing skin this season by following these ten helpful beauty tips!

  1. Put your makeup removing wipes aside for the winter and opt for a cleansing balm.
  2. Switch out your current foaming cleanser for a more mild and gently cream cleanser.
  3. Don’t scare away from oils. Try using a natural oil like argan oil for your night time moisturizer.
  4. For nights when you’re feeling extra dry, try a hydrating sheet mask or overnight sleeping mask.
  5. Sun rays can affect your skin in any weather. Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen every day.
  6. As tempting as a hot bath may be, lukewarm showers are better and won’t strip your skin dry.
  7. Try a luminous foundation instead of a matte one that could make flakey skin more obvious.
  8. Use a cream blush instead of a powder one to avoid appearing like you have makeup caked on.
  9. Waterproof eyeliner and mascara is key to keeping it from running when your eyes water from the wind.
  10. Drink plenty of water and pay attention to nutrition in order to maintain your skin from the inside out.

shutterstock_109432004Summer has come and gone, and the cool crisp fall weather is quickly approaching. Time to put away the shorts, swimsuits, and tank tops, and time to pull out the sweaters, boots, and jeans. Just like we change our wardrobe to prepare ourselves for the cooler weather, changing our skincare “wardrobe” is just as important.

I don’t know about you, but I know my skin goes through significant changes when the seasons change; it can go from oily and shiny in the summer, to dull, dehydrated and rough in the fall and winter months. If your skin is suddenly starting to feel drier and look a bit more dull, it’s time to change it up! During the summer months we tend to abuse our skin with more sun exposure, pool chemicals, and just more environmental damage in general. This can result in duller skin as our summer glow slowly fades, revealing sun damaged skin, rough texture and at times enlarged pores.

So, what products or treatments should you be looking for to prepare your skin for the fall and winter?

Your skincare should include more hydrating, exfoliating, and brightening products. And yes, you should still use a sunscreen. The clouds alone cannot filter the damaging UV rays, so incorporating a sunscreen into your daily routine is still very important. Because excessive sun exposure can cause dehydration and hyperpigmentation, ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and Vitamin C are essential for adding that suppleness and summer glow back into your skin. Vitamin C products such as CeumWorx by DermWorx uses 3 highly potent forms of Vitamin C in a 10% stabilized concentration plus biopeptides for firmer, smoother, more radiant skin. We love that the single use capsules keep the ingredients fresh and the delivery system leaves our skin velvety smooth with a healthy glow. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that is present in your body in the spaces between skin cells; when applied topically, it keeps the skin plump and hydrated. It is also the main ingredient found in many popular injectable fillers. The ZO Ommerse Renewal Cream is a lightweight hydrator that contains hyaluronic acid and is both calming and rejuvenating. We love the instant hydrating benefits and the fast absorbing formula that leaves your skin hydrated and never greasy.

None of these ingredients will do much if your skin isn’t properly exfoliated. At home exfoliation, done on a weekly basis, can significantly improve the absorption rate of your skincare treatments, but for more rapid results, microdermabrasion and chemical peels can do wonders. I know we’ve mentioned these treatments before, but we really like to add emphasis on the results these treatments can achieve. And there’s no better time to rejuvenate your skin than the fall, when you’re less likely to over expose your skin to the sun. Chemical peels can really do what products alone cannot: remove layers of damaged skin, exposing renewed healthy smoother skin. You should still, of course, continue to use your products at home for maintenance and faster results. Microdermabrasion, or Vibraderm, which we do in our office, works best in a series, and while it does not “peel” the skin, it will deeply exfoliate and stimulate faster cell renewal. This will make your skin smoother and less dull, allowing it to look radiant. At times, a Vibraderm followed by a mild chemical peel can be done on the same day to give a deeper exfoliation and faster results. A mild at-home peel can be effective for the maintenance of your in office treatments.  The ZO Invisapeel is a fantastic way keep the effects of a microderm or peel for longer.  The enzymes in this product will digest the dead skin on the surface, making your skin smoother and incredibly soft. This is also perfect to use when your skin is flaking from Retinol use.

It’s important to take a good look at your skin, and notice any changes. If your skin does go through significant changes from season to season, it’s essential that you see your skincare specialist and use the appropriate products recommended in order for your skin to remain healthy.

shutterstock_141183598Enlarged pores are a very common skin concern for many people. The skin’s texture can have a rough appearance, and makeup wearers might not be happy with the way makeup settles into pores.  It’s a common misconception that pores can be shrunk or made smaller.  While it is impossible to shrink pores, there are many ways to make pores appear smaller.

Pores can become enlarged due to different environmental factors, heredity, aging, as well as excess oil and congestion. Excessive sun exposure or regular use of tanning beds can be the culprit of making pores appear larger. Over exposure of UV rays causes damage to skin cells and ages it by causing collagen to break down at a faster rate than normal. When collagen breaks down, the skin’s elasticity suffers. As skin loses its elasticity, pores appear larger. Regular use of sunscreen and avoiding tanning beds will keep your skin looking healthy and your pores will remain less visible. Ingredients like retinoids and Alpha Hydroxy Acids also help to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores by helping to accelerate the natural exfoliation of skin cells and promoting smoother skin.

In very oily skin, enlarged pores is very common.  When pores are impacted with dirt and oil, they tend to appear larger. Dead skin cells can accumulate in the pore along with the dirt and oil, and cause blackheads and congestion. Exfoliation and oil control can greatly reduce the appearance of large pores; ingredients like retinoids and Beta Hydroxy Acids can do just that. Salicylic acid is the only Beta Hydroxy Acid and works by dissolving the bonds that holds dead skin cells together; it can also penetrate deep into the pore wall to sweep away debris from within the pore. Once the pores are free of debris, they will appear less visible. Because retinoids increase cell turnover and boost collagen and elastin, it is also an excellent ingredient for addressing enlarged pores.

Other effective treatments for enlarged pores are facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments.

Getting regular facial treatments can reduce the appearance of pores, as the esthetician will perform extractions to remove blackheads and debris in the pores and also exfoliate dead skin cells that cause pores to appear larger. Book your facials 3-4 weeks apart for faster and better results.

Chemical peels consist of Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids at much higher concentrations than an at home AHA or BHA product. Only a licensed esthetician or physician can administer a chemical peel. These are usually performed in a series and spaced out 3-4 weeks apart. Chemical peels dissolve the bonds that hold your dead skin cells together, allowing for a more thorough exfoliation and faster cell renewal. As the skin cells renew faster, smoother more vibrant skin replaces dull lack-luster skin. Depending on the strength of the peel, you may require some downtime, as the peel may leave your skin reddened and flaky.

Microdermabrasion works very similar to a chemical peel by exfoliating away dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. Unlike a chemical peel however, microdermabrasion uses a physical exfoliating action by either using crystals or an abrasive tip, wand, or paddle. This exfoliation process will also reveal brighter, smoother skin, and reduces the appearance of enlarged pores, as well as promoting new collagen growth.

A laser treatment such as Laser Genesis by Cutera, will also reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, will stimulate collagen, and renew damaged skin. Because it is a non-ablative laser, there is no downtime required, and it is an excellent treatment when paired with a series of microdermabrasions.

All of these procedures will give you that smoother, flawless skin you desire. Some procedures are best suited for certain skin types or skin concerns, and not all results will be the same for everyone. Call our office to schedule a complimentary skincare consultation to determine which procedure will be best for you.
