How Fat Transfer Works

Dr. Dreyfuss performs fat transfer as an outpatient procedure in our AAASF and JCAHO-accredited surgical facility. Your fat grafting surgery will be performed under epidural or general anesthesia.

Fat grafting, also known as autologous fat transfer, involves moving fat from one part of the body to another. This procedure consists of two steps: fat extraction from a donor area and injection into areas where additional volume is desired.

Breast size, shape, and position can change after significant weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Similarly, pockets of stubborn fat can remain long after the baby weight is gone. While these physical changes are frequent, they can make patients feel less confident. If you’re interested in achieving improved body contours and uplifted, fuller breasts, a mommy makeover is a perfect solution. Surgeries recommended to meet these goals include the following.

Common Treatment Areas for Fat Grafting

The two-step procedure involves initially extracting excess fat from a donor site via liposuction, followed by purifying the extracted fat to ensure healthy cells are transferred. Then, the purified fat is injected into the targeted area to enhance volume.

Common donor sites include:

  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Flanks
  • Thighs

During recovery, the transferred fat will develop a blood supply. However, not all transferred fat will survive. Typically, 50 to 70% of the transferred fat survives, so Dr. Dreyfuss may transfer additional fat to achieve the desired results.

Facial Rejuvenation

Non-surgical dermal fillers provide a temporary solution for restoring facial volume and reducing wrinkles. Facial fat transfer involves a longer healing process compared to dermal fillers, but can offer longer-lasting results for fine lines and deep wrinkles.

Facial fat transfer can:

  • Reduce creases and smooth moderate to severe fine lines and wrinkles
  • Restore volume and fullness to facial tissues
  • Improve the appearance of the undereye area to reduce shadows
  • Correct the appearance of scars
  • Enhance jawline, chin, and jowls
  • Address hollowed areas, including temples or cheeks

Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation aims to adjust the appearance of thinning or naturally thin lips for increased volume. Often, non-surgical lip augmentation is temporarily achieved using dermal fillers. However, fat transfer can also restore lip shape and increase volume, offering a refreshed look and long-lasting results.

Fat transfer lip augmentation enhances lips by:

  • Adding volume for a fuller, youthful look
  • Refining natural shape
  • Minimizing lines and wrinkles around the lips
  • Tightening skin around the lips

Hand Rejuvenation

Hands are one of the first areas to show aging. Fat transfer hand rejuvenation can restore lost volume and improve the appearance of boney or sinewy hands, as well as enhance skin texture. Results typically last several years before maintenance is needed.

Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer can be used for breast augmentation, offering subtle and natural-looking results without breast implants or in conjunction with breast implants to enhance the results. By restoring or increasing volume in the breasts, fat transfer for breast augmentation can enhance the appearance of the breasts.

Buttock Augmentation | Brazilian Butt Lift

Fat transfer buttock augmentation, also known as a Brazilian Butt Lift, can enhance the volume and lift of the buttocks, thereby improving their contour and shape. This procedure can help achieve a balanced overall figure.

What to Expect from Your Chicago Fat Grafting Surgery

First, Dr. Dreyfuss will make small incisions in the donor area to allow the liposuction device to access the unwanted fat cells. The incisions are small enough that they’ll look inconspicuous when they heal. Through these incisions, he’ll insert a small tube or cannula to strategically suction the fat.

After the fat has been extracted, it will be processed to ensure healthy fat cells are transferred. The fat is placed into syringes for injection into the recipient location.

Following the extraction, Dr. Dreyfuss will cleanse the recipient location. He will treat the area with an anesthetic to reduce discomfort before precisely injecting the fat to achieve extra volume.

Depending on the extent of your fat grafting procedure, it may take 2 to 3 hours.

Fat Transfer Recovery

Fat grafting is usually performed as an outpatient surgery, so you can go home the same day with someone to drive you.

Bruising, swelling, and soreness are common after the procedure but should resolve in a few weeks. You may need to wear a compression garment to reduce swelling, support your contours, and ensure smooth results. Moderate pain and discomfort are expected; Dr. Dreyfuss may prescribe pain medications or recommend over-the-counter medications.

Patients generally require a week off work for the initial recovery after the procedure, depending on its extent. Most patients can resume light exercise, such as walking, within a week. Get sufficient rest and avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for four to six weeks for complete healing. During follow-up appointments, Dr. Dreyfuss will assess your progress and provide clearance for exercise and other activities accordingly.

Once it establishes a blood supply, transferred fat will behave as any other fat. As such, it will react to weight fluctuations. To maintain your fat transfer results, it’s important to continue your healthy diet and exercise routine.
