One thing all mothers have in common is that pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding change their body dramatically. For some, a healthy diet and working out regularly can help restore your pre-baby body. For others, more dramatic changes are necessary to eliminate stubborn fat deposits and excess skin. A mommy makeover combines multiple cosmetic surgeries to help a mother regain the youthful figure she once enjoyed.

What Does a Mommy Makeover Correct?

A mommy makeover can address various aesthetic concerns. Dr. Dreyfuss will discuss goals and desired results with you during a consultation. With your input in mind, he will structure a surgical plan to match your cosmetic needs and desired goals. Procedures may include:

Most women want to improve their breasts, abdomen, and buttocks. Combining cosmetic procedures can help mothers correct multiple problem areas at once. From his full suite of body contouring procedures, Dr. Dreyfuss can improve your body outline by performing two or more aesthetic surgeries at once.

Best Candidates

Optimal candidates for a mommy makeover share the following characteristics.

In Good Health

As with any operation, mommy makeover candidates should be in good overall health. The body must be capable of healing properly to successfully recover after surgery. If you have any existing conditions or medical concerns, let Dr. Dreyfuss know. From there, he can determine if a mommy makeover is right for you.

At Optimal Body Weight

The best candidates for a mommy makeover are close to their healthy weight. Being over- or under-weight may compromise the outcome if you lose or gain weight after surgery. You should be aware that a mommy makeover is not a weight-loss treatment. It’s a contouring procedure designed to remove stubborn fat pads and excess skin.

Have Time to Recover

Depending on which procedures are part of your mommy makeover, you will need time to heal. You should plan at least two weeks off from your regular schedule to rest and recover. If you include a tummy tuck with the procedure, expect a longer recovery, about a month to six weeks.

No Future Pregnancies

Before investing in enhancing your figure with a mommy makeover, you should wait until you are no longer planning to have children. Any future pregnancies can negatively impact your results.

Non-Smokers

We all know smoking can be hazardous to your health. After all, that’s why there’s a surgeon’s general warning on every pack. Smoking impedes circulation, making incisions less likely to heal and close properly. It also increases the likelihood of infection and weakens the immune system.

If you smoke, quit. If you can’t quit for good, stop smoking for at least two weeks before and two weeks after surgery.

Volbella XC®

Patients who want fuller lips and to diminish lines around the mouth can benefit from Juvederm’s Volbella XC®. Downturned lip corners, upper lip lines, and thin lips can create a tired, aged appearance, but they are no match for this filler! Volbella XC® is a minimally invasive injection treatment that restores lost volume, smooths lip texture, and creates a beautiful lip contour.

Volbella XC® uses an injectable gel with Vycross technology, which customizes a light blend of hyaluronic acid. This active ingredient is a natural sugar found in the human body, so there is no risk of allergic reaction. Volbella XC is clinically proven to last up to one year for most patients.

What can VOLBELLA® correct?

  • Improve lip contour
  • Enhance Cupid’s bow
  • Restore lost lip volume subtly
  • Fill in corners of the mouth
  • Make lips more shapely
  • Smooth upper lip lines

Restylane®

One of the most effective dermal fillers for reducing folds and wrinkles and restoring lost volume to improve facial contours, Restylane® is the first of its kind to be FDA approved for lip enhancement for patients over 21. It can plump up the facial volume which has been lost as a result of environmental factors, genetics, or age.

Restylane® is a dermal filler which restores volume by stimulating natural collagen production in target areas. It contains hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance which plays a significant role in your body regenerating collagen.

Restylane® provides positive aesthetic results in resolving wrinkles and fine lines, deep folds around the mouth, and thin lips. After a 30-minute session, most patients return to work or normal activities immediately. Any swelling or redness is temporary, diminishing within a day or two. Results will appear gradually and last up to six months.

shutterstock_109432004Summer has come and gone, and the cool crisp fall weather is quickly approaching. Time to put away the shorts, swimsuits, and tank tops, and time to pull out the sweaters, boots, and jeans. Just like we change our wardrobe to prepare ourselves for the cooler weather, changing our skincare “wardrobe” is just as important.

I don’t know about you, but I know my skin goes through significant changes when the seasons change; it can go from oily and shiny in the summer, to dull, dehydrated and rough in the fall and winter months. If your skin is suddenly starting to feel drier and look a bit more dull, it’s time to change it up! During the summer months we tend to abuse our skin with more sun exposure, pool chemicals, and just more environmental damage in general. This can result in duller skin as our summer glow slowly fades, revealing sun damaged skin, rough texture and at times enlarged pores.

So, what products or treatments should you be looking for to prepare your skin for the fall and winter?

Your skincare should include more hydrating, exfoliating, and brightening products. And yes, you should still use a sunscreen. The clouds alone cannot filter the damaging UV rays, so incorporating a sunscreen into your daily routine is still very important. Because excessive sun exposure can cause dehydration and hyperpigmentation, ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and Vitamin C are essential for adding that suppleness and summer glow back into your skin. Vitamin C products such as CeumWorx by DermWorx uses 3 highly potent forms of Vitamin C in a 10% stabilized concentration plus biopeptides for firmer, smoother, more radiant skin. We love that the single use capsules keep the ingredients fresh and the delivery system leaves our skin velvety smooth with a healthy glow. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that is present in your body in the spaces between skin cells; when applied topically, it keeps the skin plump and hydrated. It is also the main ingredient found in many popular injectable fillers. The ZO Ommerse Renewal Cream is a lightweight hydrator that contains hyaluronic acid and is both calming and rejuvenating. We love the instant hydrating benefits and the fast absorbing formula that leaves your skin hydrated and never greasy.

None of these ingredients will do much if your skin isn’t properly exfoliated. At home exfoliation, done on a weekly basis, can significantly improve the absorption rate of your skincare treatments, but for more rapid results, microdermabrasion and chemical peels can do wonders. I know we’ve mentioned these treatments before, but we really like to add emphasis on the results these treatments can achieve. And there’s no better time to rejuvenate your skin than the fall, when you’re less likely to over expose your skin to the sun. Chemical peels can really do what products alone cannot: remove layers of damaged skin, exposing renewed healthy smoother skin. You should still, of course, continue to use your products at home for maintenance and faster results. Microdermabrasion, or Vibraderm, which we do in our office, works best in a series, and while it does not “peel” the skin, it will deeply exfoliate and stimulate faster cell renewal. This will make your skin smoother and less dull, allowing it to look radiant. At times, a Vibraderm followed by a mild chemical peel can be done on the same day to give a deeper exfoliation and faster results. A mild at-home peel can be effective for the maintenance of your in office treatments.  The ZO Invisapeel is a fantastic way keep the effects of a microderm or peel for longer.  The enzymes in this product will digest the dead skin on the surface, making your skin smoother and incredibly soft. This is also perfect to use when your skin is flaking from Retinol use.

It’s important to take a good look at your skin, and notice any changes. If your skin does go through significant changes from season to season, it’s essential that you see your skincare specialist and use the appropriate products recommended in order for your skin to remain healthy.

Portrait Of Beautiful Young Blonde Girl In Black DressHow can you achieve that “red carpet glow” without a celebrity makeup artist on speed dial?

If your skin is looking lackluster, dull, and you need a pick-me-up, a series of chemical peels might be just what you need. Don’t let the words “chemical peel” scare you. Surely you’ve heard stories of chemical peels gone wrong, but applied correctly and carefully, you can have great results! Make sure that you research types of chemical peels and the location where you will have your chemical peel done.

Only a licensed esthetician or a physician can apply a chemical peel.  If you have a fear of chemical peels, fear not; there are many superficial peels, that are mild and will give you that instant “red carpet glow” in just a few minutes, without the redness or peeling.

The Skin Medica Illuminize Peel is a mild blend of alpha and beta hydroxy acids which will impart a radiance and glow to your skin without the significant downtime. It removes layers of dead skin cells to remove minor imperfections and leaves your skin soft and radiant.  This type of peel is perfect for you if you have an upcoming event, a reunion, or wedding as it requires very little to no downtime. You will see a difference a few hours post peel, but a series of peels every 3-4 weeks, will give you the most dramatic results. Your esthetician or physician may recommend you start a targeted protocol specific to your concerns, at least 5 days prior to your peel for better results. As with any peel, minimizing sun exposure is essential. Using skincare recommended by your esthetician the day after your peel is key for maintaining the healthy glow for weeks to come. Ask your esthetician which peel would work for you.

shutterstock_57017042 (1)If you have never had a facial treatment before you may have several questions such as: what is a facial and why do I need one? What type of facial is best for me? What should I expect after a facial?

A facial is a cosmetic procedure in which the skin is deeply cleansed, exfoliated, and massaged and can only be performed by a licensed esthecian. The purpose of a facial is to rejuvenate the skin, remove impurities, and increase circulation. Before booking a facial, you should know what to expect. The first thing your esthetician will do is a full consultation. You may be asked to fill out a consultation form with questions about your skin and health history. Your esthetician will ask you questions about your current skincare routine, what your skin concerns are, and what you are looking to achieve. The next step is a thorough skin analysis. Your skin will be examined under a magnifying lamp where your esthetician will look at your skin up close and determine which treatment will be best for you. Your skin may also be examined under a Wood’s lamp, which is a hand held device that uses a black light to illuminate areas of the face that would otherwise be difficult to see. The Wood’s lamp can show bacterial infections in the skin or underlying hyperpigmentation; your esthetician will determine which skincare protocol and treatments will address those concerns. After careful analysis, your treatment will begin with a thorough skin cleansing followed by a deep exfoliation. Your skin will then be prepped for extractions using a desincrustation solution and steam, which will soften the skin and allow for proper blackhead removal. Extractions can be uncomfortable, but shouldn’t be painful. Always inform your esthetician if you’re feeling any pain during your facial. Immediately following your extractions, the skin will be toned and desincrustation solution will be removed. Your skin will then be massaged using essential oils appropriate for your skin type. After massage, a facial mask will be applied to address specific concerns and will be allowed to absorb for about 10 minutes. After the mask is removed, your esthetician will then massage skincare products on your skin and will give you instructions on how to properly care for your skin post facial.  A skincare protocol will be recommended in order for you to care for your skin at home and  you should expect to have your next facial within 3-4 weeks. A regular series of facials will give you the best results.

It can be a bit confusing when choosing which type of facial to get. Generally, there are anti-aging, deep cleansing and sensitive skin facials. So how do you know what to choose? The type of facial that would be best suited for you truly depends on your skin type and concern. Your esthetician can help determine which facial is best for you. All facials are able to be customized to your specific needs. No skin is identical therefore no facial will be identical.

After a facial your skin is deeply cleansed, exfoliated and massaged; circulation is increased which can cause some flushing or temporary mild redness. You should also expect your skin to go through mild detox which might cause a few small breakouts and is completely normal. Avoid picking at these breakouts as it can cause scarring.  After your facial you should avoid applying anything to your skin until the next morning, this includes water; do not wash your face until the next morning. Try not to use any at home peels or retinoid products for at least 3 days after your facial; avoid steam, sauna, or working out after a facial. Your skin has already been exfoliated and massaged and you do not want to over exfoliate or over stimulate your skin. Make sure to avoid prolonged sun exposure, and apply plenty of sunscreen when outdoors. And lastly, avoid applying any makeup for the rest of the day. Your skin will have a glow and radiance that you will not want to cover with makeup.

Proper care of the skin is a partnership between you and your esthetician. You should consistently take care of your skin to maintain the results of the facial in order for you to have the long term  results you desire.  As long as you follow the aftercare instructions, use the skincare products recommended and continue to see your esthetician on a monthly basis, you should expect to see your skin improve overtime.
