Is your skincare routine close to non-existent? Because you’re busy being a mom, your daily ritual may be limited to washing your face, applying lotion, and the occasional skin mask. Or less, even. Many active mothers today feel intimidated, not knowing what products to buy or what treatments work.

With that in mind, we feel it’s essential to reach out to mothers to help them kick off a skincare routine. Here are some helpful hints to make skincare easy.

Cleanse Before Bed

Washing your face is crucial but don’t overdo it. We recommend giving your face a thorough cleansing before saying nighty night. For daily use, we recommend Alastin Gentle Cleanser to thoroughly remove make-up and environmental pollutants. It is self-foaming and sulfate-free and contains calming antioxidants. Or you can employ SkinMedica’s Sensitive Skin Cleanser that is a gentle cleanser and hydrates sensitive skin.

Hydrate

To ensure youthful skin, you must hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. And not just with a topical product, but from inside out. Drink plenty of water daily, especially if you manage a workout for the day. Then apply a medical-grade moisturizer before bed. We recommend Alastin Sooth + Protect Recovery Balm and SkinMedica’s Dermal Repair Cream.

Sunscreen

Nothing in nature is more harmful to your skin than the sun. Its dangerous UV rays can harm skin cells, making your skin look dull and old. When it comes to sunscreen, we recommend HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum SPF 36 from Alastin or Total Defense and Repair SPF 50+.

Wrinkle Prevention

Getting the proper nutrients and vitamins to your skin is critical to maintaining elasticity and plumpness. To maintain a youthful, vibrant skin presence and combat the visible signs of aging, you should religiously use a skin rejuvenation serum for skin tone and texture. We recommend Alastin’s Restorative Skin Complex or SkinMedica’s TNS Advanced+ Serum.

Eye Care

The eyelids are the most delicate skin on your body. They are very susceptible to wrinkling and sagging. And you want to resolve or prevent undereye circles that make you look tired and worn—Alastin’s Restorative Eye Treatment or Skin Medica’s Instant Bright Eye Cream are excellent products for the eyelids.

The Neck

To keep your neck long, smooth, and sleek to frame your facial beauty, we recommend Alastin’s Restorative Neck Complex with TriHex Technology. The TNS Essential Serum from SkinMedica offers an all-in-one skin rejuvenating product to soften the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, skin tone, and texture as well.

Facials and Peels

When you can find the time (and a babysitter), schedule a visit for a stress-free time at our Spa Services with our friendly Esthetician Daneyda.  She offers a wide range of anti-aging facials, brightening facials, deep cleaning facials, and redness relief treatments. For more severe exfoliation, she performs dermabrasion and chemical peels.

One thing all mothers have in common is that pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding change their body dramatically. For some, a healthy diet and working out regularly can help restore your pre-baby body. For others, more dramatic changes are necessary to eliminate stubborn fat deposits and excess skin. A mommy makeover combines multiple cosmetic surgeries to help a mother regain the youthful figure she once enjoyed.

What Does a Mommy Makeover Correct?

A mommy makeover can address various aesthetic concerns. Dr. Dreyfuss will discuss goals and desired results with you during a consultation. With your input in mind, he will structure a surgical plan to match your cosmetic needs and desired goals. Procedures may include:

Most women want to improve their breasts, abdomen, and buttocks. Combining cosmetic procedures can help mothers correct multiple problem areas at once. From his full suite of body contouring procedures, Dr. Dreyfuss can improve your body outline by performing two or more aesthetic surgeries at once.

Best Candidates

Optimal candidates for a mommy makeover share the following characteristics.

In Good Health

As with any operation, mommy makeover candidates should be in good overall health. The body must be capable of healing properly to successfully recover after surgery. If you have any existing conditions or medical concerns, let Dr. Dreyfuss know. From there, he can determine if a mommy makeover is right for you.

At Optimal Body Weight

The best candidates for a mommy makeover are close to their healthy weight. Being over- or under-weight may compromise the outcome if you lose or gain weight after surgery. You should be aware that a mommy makeover is not a weight-loss treatment. It’s a contouring procedure designed to remove stubborn fat pads and excess skin.

Have Time to Recover

Depending on which procedures are part of your mommy makeover, you will need time to heal. You should plan at least two weeks off from your regular schedule to rest and recover. If you include a tummy tuck with the procedure, expect a longer recovery, about a month to six weeks.

No Future Pregnancies

Before investing in enhancing your figure with a mommy makeover, you should wait until you are no longer planning to have children. Any future pregnancies can negatively impact your results.

Non-Smokers

We all know smoking can be hazardous to your health. After all, that’s why there’s a surgeon’s general warning on every pack. Smoking impedes circulation, making incisions less likely to heal and close properly. It also increases the likelihood of infection and weakens the immune system.

If you smoke, quit. If you can’t quit for good, stop smoking for at least two weeks before and two weeks after surgery.

Are You Ready to Learn More?

If you are considering a mommy makeover to resolve body issues resulting from pregnancy, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Dreyfuss is here to discuss the procedure with you. To start the process, contact us online or set up a virtual consultation.

Of the people who consider facelift surgery, many worry about their results. The images of facelift failures displayed on television and social media could cause significant anxiety with potential patients worrying about a similar outcome.

Fortunately, choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon, preparing, and following post-surgical instruction can meet or exceed your aesthetic goals. Here are five steps to follow to ensure you get the results you deserve.

1. Choose the Right Surgeon

While most surgeons can legally perform a facelift, a board-certified plastic surgeon exceeds all others in training, skill, and ethical standards.  Their expertise centers on facial anatomy and reconstructive surgery. They must keep abreast of the most modern techniques and technology through continuing education. And their ethical standards are the most stringent in medicine.

2. Be Honest During Your Consultation

During your consultation, be honest with Dr. Dreyfuss about your desired results. Be prepared to discuss previous surgeries, drug allergies, and current medications. Dr. Dreyfuss will evaluate your unique facial anatomy to compare with your cosmetic goals and give you his assessment. Together, you will devise a surgical plan designed to deliver the best results possible.

Your consultation is your opportunity to ask questions and state your concerns. Come prepared with a list of what you would like to discuss.  Here are some questions you might want to consider:

  • How often do you perform facelifts?
  • How long have you been a plastic surgeon?
  • What makes me a good candidate for the surgery?
  • Where will you perform the operation?
  • Are there any complications and risks I should know about facelift surgery?

3. Get Your Skin Ready for Surgery

The secret to excellent facelift results is healthy skin. If you smoke, quit for at least two weeks before surgery. Use sunblock religiously before and after surgery to diminish sun damage. Start a medical-grade skin care routine at home. Eat the right foods for healthy skin.

4. Excellent Post-Surgery Care

Think about buying a new car – an expensive one, like a Maserati or Ferrari. You will want to have the vehicle serviced according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You should approach your facelift recovery the same way.

Dr. Dreyfuss will give you detailed instructions about prescribed medications, bandages, incision care, and sutures. He will advise you on diet, rest, and exercise. Follow his instructions to the letter!

5. Managing Volume Loss

Today, a facelift is more than stretching skin taut. It’s about volume. With age, we lose fat and bone, creating a sagging, deflated facial appearance. By managing this loss by restoring volume during surgery and beyond, the results will be longer-lasting. Dr. Dreyfuss may suggest enhancing your facelift results with other cosmetic treatments like dermal fillers or facial implants.

As winter gives way to warmer temperatures, your skin care routine should also shift. Transitioning out of the cold, dry weather into warmth and sunshine can be a significant change for our skin.

Spring brings more hours of sunlight and higher humidity – factors that may dramatically impact your skin health and complexion during the hotter months. Here are some notable tips our team put together to make the change from winter to spring.

Switch Skin Care Products

As we all know, winter in the Chicago area can be harsh, cold, and windy, leading us to rely on heavy moisturizers or creams. However, as the weather warms, you can use gentler products instead. Switch to lighter moisturizers and use a sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher. Be sure to look for medical-grade products tailored to your skin type.

Stay Healthy

An easy way to avoid breakouts is to drink plenty of water and eat healthy foods. Consuming abundant portions of fruits and vegetables daily can give your skin the minerals and vitamins it needs. Committing to an exercise routine will also work wonders for your body. Remember to wash and moisturize your face after working out, especially if you like to exercise outdoors.

Exfoliate

Once the winter climate is behind us, it’s an excellent time to slough off that tired, dull skin. Exfoliation treatments like laser skin rejuvenation, facials, Vivace microneedling, and microdermabrasion will reveal fresh, radiant skin.

Get Your Beauty Sleep

Getting sufficient rest can improve skin quality, but it’s equally critical to consider the conditions in which you sleep. Keep your bedroom cool to prevent night sweats, which may clog pores and make it more challenging to get a good night’s sleep.

Also, change your sheets and pillowcases weekly – the oils from your skin and hair leave behind traces that can cause acne breakouts.

Apply Sunscreen Liberally and Often

Once the temperature gets warmer and the days lengthen, people tend to spend more time outdoors. And with the warmer climate, we wear less clothing, exposing more skin to the sun. Make sure to apply a generous amount of sunscreen daily, and reapply every two hours. Choose a medical-grade sunscreen from our product selection page. Your skin will thank you today and for many years to come.

With many of us getting tired of dealing with this pandemic, our safety and health concerns still must rule the day. In many areas, including Chicago, wearing a facemask is becoming the norm in today’s world. And until we find a solution to this COVID-19 problem, we need to be diligent in protecting ourselves and others. But what about our skin?

Wearing a mask regularly may cause us some inconvenience. Yet, the fabric brushing against our facial skin may create its own problems. Irritation, acne breakouts, chafing, redness, and even bruising can result. With these skin issues looming, our staff at Dreyfuss Plastic Surgery rounded up these simple tips to ensure your skin is protected while covering your face.

Choose a Cotton Mask

While N95 masks are reserved for frontline workers and medical staff, we feel the best option for you will be coverings made from tightly woven cotton. Synthetic covers fail to breathe freely, and when they rub against the skin can cause irritation and rash. You might want to look for a mask that has an inside pocket to increase filtration by adding a coffee filter inside.

Wash Your Face. A Lot.

Wearing a mask creates a perfect area for dirt, oil, and sweat to collect. We recommend you add a gentle cleanser to your skincare arsenal to wash your face often. There are products with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser you should use before and after wearing your mask.

Keep Your Mask Clean

Many of us have turned wearing a mask into a personal fashion statement. Some are even creating their own masks at home. If you are wearing homemade coverings that are not disposable, make sure you wash them daily after use. You may want to make more than one for a selection, so you can match the outfit you’re wearing each day and keep the coverings clean.

Reduce Friction

The most common problem we’re seeing is that face masks are rubbing the skin raw. We suggest finding a suitable ointment or salve to protect sensitive areas from chafing and friction. Or you can use household products like Aquaphor or Vaseline to prevent your skin from breaking out in a rash.

Skip Makeup

If this pandemic has one positive overture for your skin, it’s an opportunity to skip makeup—a perfect time to give your face a break for days at a time. If you don’t work at home, simply dress your eyes to look marvelous, and then use the mask to cover up instead of makeup.

Treat Acne Gently

If you notice a breakout, don’t pull out the big guns. Face coverings create a humid environment that promotes sebum production, clogged pores, and blemishes. To counter, skip the harsh treatments and opt for a soothing product to calm irritation and redness. We recommend salicylic acid as a healthy choice for its ability to reduce inflammation and unclog pores. Also, acne patches under your mask is a good trick while out in public. Who’s to know?

Schedule a consultation with Dr. David Dreyfuss today and learn how to protect your skin during this pandemic.

A gorgeous day in the sun requires some surefire measures to protect your skin. Taking care of your skin while enjoying yourself outdoors is easy, as long as you practice some helpful hints. Not fully understanding your sunscreen could lead to unpleasant harm to your skin over time, like pigmentation issues, wrinkles, and fine lines. It can also be a health issue, with skin cancer a significant concern.

To ensure you enjoy yourself safely in the sun, here are five tips Dr. David Dreyfuss and his dedicated staff have for you as we approach the warmer months.

1. Not Putting on Enough

We find most people are not generous enough when applying sunscreen, using only about a quarter to half of the recommended amount. The adult dosage should be around 30 milliliters, or a little over an ounce for the entire body.

2. Not Reapplying Often Enough

OK, you’re slathering the recommended amount on as you begin to enjoy the beautiful day, but then you stop. After a couple of hours, the active ingredient will break down to insufficient levels, leaving your skin unprotected. Also, it takes about 15 minutes for the product to absorb properly into the skin.

We recommend to reapply sunscreen generously about every 90 minutes or so. You should also reapply your sunscreen every time you come out of the water, whether its label says “waterproof” or not. Allow the sunscreen time to absorb into your skin before going out into the sun.

3. Using an Expired Product

Resupply your stockpile of sunscreen every year by throwing out last year’s and replacing it anew. The protection ingredients don’t last forever. The SPF number on the label will diminish as the months pass.

4. Not Covering the Entire Body

To ensure proper skin health, you should cover all exposed skin in sunscreen. We know your shoulders and back are hard to reach and are easy to forget about. Ask for some assistance to get complete coverage if necessary.

5. Only Applying Sunscreen When the Sun Is Out

Just because you have some nice cloud coverage doesn’t mean UV rays are taking a day off. On the contrary, UV rays are still potent when it’s overcast. You tend to stay out longer when it’s shady because it’s not as hot, leaving your skin exposed to danger for longer periods. Get into the habit of applying sunscreen before you leave every morning, whether it’s sunny, rainy, or somewhere in between.

Be on the Safe Side

You can never be too careful when it comes to your skin. It’s your body’s largest organ and one of the few exposed to external factors. To ensure its safety, follow the suggestions above. And if you have other skin concerns, whether cosmetic or skin health, contact us today. We can help you achieve skin beauty and a healthy complexion, both now and for many years to come.

Now that the months of slush, snow, and frigid temperatures are over, and spring is in the air, it’s time to rethink your skincare routine. Winter is gone, taking with it dreariness and itchy, dry skin. And although you’ve spent these months layering balms, serums, and oils, the warmer air, and increased humidity will mean your skin will encounter a shock. So, what should you do now? Here are some helpful hints to help you transition your skincare routine from winter to spring.

Moisturize for Warmer Temperatures

Now that it’s spring, you should choose lighter moisturizers like a water-based or hyaluronic acid formula as the temperatures rise. During the colder months, our skin tends to hold moisture with less need for protection. Although a moisturizer with an SPF 30 is excellent when it’s cold, we stress the importance of a sunscreen separate from your makeup, and lotion that’s at least SPF 50.

Exfoliation

Contrary to popular belief, your skin requires exfoliation when it’s extra-dry. Sloughing off dead skin cells and unclogging pores is paramount for healthy, glowing skin. Unfortunately, many try to do this at home with harsh scrubs and over-the-counter peels. But spring is the best time to schedule a medspa treatment. Here are the remedies we recommend this time of year.

Microdermabrasion

This aesthetic treatment can resolve cosmetic skin issues with an added collagen boost. A gentle stream of particles will exfoliate damaged and dry skin to reveal a glowing, fresh skin layer almost immediately.  Microdermabrasion gently vacuums away exfoliated cells and skin particles in sensitive areas, including the face, neck, chest, and arms.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation

Laser Genesis is an advanced YAG laser treatment for skin conditions like large pores, scars, wrinkles, uneven texture, and redness. You will enjoy a rejuvenated, healthy appearance with radiant skin to enhance your facial beauty for those springtime events.

Vivace Microneedling

Vivace microneedling combines radiofrequency and microneedling to deliver tighter skin and trigger new collagen production.

Facials

Our customized facials will transition your skin by restoring, revitalizing, and nourishing it to a beautiful presence. Our aesthetician will analyze your skin to recommend which of our facials is best suited for you. It’s also a great way to spend a relaxing hour or two.

Chemical Peels

This time-tested skincare treatment can treat your skin at various layers by removing the old and welcoming in the new. Various depths of chemical peels can resolve many skin flaws like wrinkles, scarring, hyperpigmentation, and uneven tone or texture.

Medical-Grade Treatments for Your Home

Skincare is a daily discipline that requires dedication and high-quality products. Fortunately, Dreyfuss Aesthetics offers the very best in skincare products you can enjoy using from the comfort of your home, including ZO® SkinHealth, SkinMedica®, Dermworx™, and TEOXANE®.

Scar treatment is not a simple process. Multiple factors need consideration before choosing the best approach. Surgeons and skincare professionals require detailed information to determine the type of scar needing treatment and the approach necessary to soften its visibility. The severity of scar tissue, size and depth of the wound, and the patient’s age and current health status all get taken into account before choosing which procedure will deliver the best results.

Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component that supports the skin by attracting and retaining moisture. Many dermal fillers incorporate this sugar to add plumpness to voids and hollows in facial areas. These injectables are also suitable to soften fine lines and wrinkles. You can reduce the appearance of acne scarring by having dermal fillers injected under the skin tissue. These injections will plump up the skin adjacent to the scar and diminish its visibility.

You should note that dermal fillers are a temporary fix to facial blemishes, as the body will absorb the product after a few months to two years. Additional sessions can continue the results until you decide on a more permanent approach.

Laser Surgery Treatment

For patients interested in taking a more permanent approach, laser treatments could fit the bill. This treatment requires a consultation with a skin evaluation and physical check-up. Then, Dr. Dreyfuss can recommend the proper laser treatment for skin type and scar reduction. A laser treatment will transform the scar tissue so it can blend into the adjacent skin and become less obvious. These treatments use advanced technology that can provide outstanding results when performed by certified health care professionals. Multiple sessions may be necessary.

Exfoliation

This straightforward approach removes the damaged skin surface, allowing for the fresh, supple, underlying skin to emerge. Various treatments can accomplish removing the dead and damaged skin layer while promoting the body’s natural healing process. They include the following.

Chemical Peels

As the name indicates, a chemical peel will use chemical compounds to remove scar tissue. This approach sloughs off damaged skin tissue to reveal a new skin layer. There will be some redness and irritation during the peeling process.

Microdermabrasion

We can boost collagen production with a gentle stream of tiny particles that exfoliate the outer layer of damaged skin while providing a fresh, radiant skin glow. Because microdermabrasion removes small amounts of skin, results are immediate. Treatment sites include the face, neck, chest, back, arms, and hands.

Vivace Microneedling

The establishment of the advanced Vivace Microneedling with radiofrequency promotes skin rejuvenation to a higher level in the Chicago area. This innovative procedure is 100% natural, linking two established technologies into one procedure. Patients see improvement in anti-aging and the reduction of scarring, wrinkles, stretch marks, and more.

If you want to address scarring resulting from injury, acne, or surgery, schedule a consultation with Dr. Dreyfuss today.

Chicago winters, biting chill, dreary rain, and breathtaking winds not only bring down  our mood, but they can wreak havoc on our skin health as well. The dark days of these colder months can cause our skin to become dry, red, flaky, and inflamed. But how can you keep your complexion luminous and plump throughout the winter?

Here we reveal tried-and-true practices that will keep your complexion healthy and radiant all winter long.

1. Use SPF

Winter is not the time to stop using sunscreen; in fact, it may be the time to use it more. Although temperatures drop significantly, the sun still shines and can cause extreme damage to the skin. If there is snow out, it will reflect UV rays, much like sand on the beach. We recommend a reliable sunscreen with at least 30 SPF on exposed skin like the face, neck, and hands. This practice will reduce dry skin and fight the effects of aging.

2: Hydrate

Maintaining your water intake during the winter months is essential to your health. During the warmer months, we drink plenty of water, but as the temperatures drop, it’s easy to neglect hydration. Although perspiration decreases and losing moisture may not be as much of a concern, you should still be drinking at least a couple of liters a day.

3. Switch Up Your Moisturiser

Although increasing water intake is a good move, it won’t by itself save your skin from drying out during the winter. Freezing temperatures can cause much damage, so finding winter skincare products is a must. You should look to facial oils and hydrating serums that amp up your moisture levels and maintain your beautiful skin.

4.   Exfoliate

Exfoliation during the winter months is equally important to both body and face. Many people experience flaky skin during the colder months, and the best way to eliminate this dead skin is to exfoliate. You should exfoliate to increase skin health at least once a week, but don’t overdo it. Too much exfoliation may cause its own problems.

A dry body brush is a great way to exfoliate before you bathe or shower. Long sweeping motions over your torso, legs, and arms will remove dry skin and keep the skin’s circulation active to increase blood flow to the skin and improve its overall health.

5. Dress accordingly.

This tip is critical—although painfully obvious. Although we tend to dress to impress, don’t let our fashion get in the way of wearing layers when it’s cold. Gloves, scarfs, long sleeves, and leggings, as well as sweaters, thermal undergarments, and coats, will protect your skin from the harsh winter environment.

For more information about how you can keep your skin looking its best and find out about transformative non-surgical and surgical treatment options, contact us today to schedule your consultation.

As men and women age, our facial aesthetics become more of a challenge with wrinkles and fine lines, drooping eyelids, crow’s feet and volume loss around the cheeks. Another under-emphasized cosmetic issue is a double chin. Whether weight fluctuations or genetics, submental fat beneath the jawline can make any patient look old and overweight. Not the best appearance as we move closer toward the holidays and those unexpected pictures taken by everyone with a handy smartphone.

Fortunately, there are multiple cosmetic treatments which can eliminate submental fat to deliver a sleek, slender and youthful neck just in time for your fall and winter festivities.

Neck Liposuction

This surgical solution will enhance your appearance by delivering an attractive frame to your facial beauty. It is an effective procedure designed to help create a natural-looking, beautiful neck line with patients who deal with mild amounts of excess fat and skin laxity. Neck liposuction gently removes fat from the neck area and can stimulate collagen remodeling and skin tightening in the months following surgery. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Dreyfuss uses advanced techniques to slim and shape your neck to a graceful contour providing your facial appearance with overall balance and beauty.

Patients with mild to moderate submental fat and excess skin in the neck area are suitable candidates for neck liposuction. They want to improve their lower facial profile and jawline definition.

CoolSculpting®

CoolSculpting® offers a non-invasive, non-surgical fat reduction treatment which literally freezes away the fat. This state-of-the-art treatment mechanism is suitable for multiple treatment areas including the neck. With a special attachment, CoolSculpting® targets submental fat below the jawline and kills excess fat cells without affecting adjacent tissues. The body will naturally dispose of these cells leaving you with a slender and sexy neck line within a few weeks after the procedure.

The treatment lasts for less than an hour and is so comfortable you can respond to emails, read, or stream your favorite shows during the treatment session. Some of our patients even take a nap.

Kybella®

Since 2015, Kybella® has been a revolutionary fat dissolver in the world of nonsurgical aesthetic treatments. Many in the cosmetic industry are saying it’s the biggest cosmetic breakthrough since Botox®.

Before Kybella®’s approval, there were few options to deal with submental fat other than liposuction and wearing a turtleneck. But now, this non-surgical procedure makes it possible to rid yourself of an unsightly double chin and achieve an elegant, and sleek neckline without incisions or downtime.

Kybella® is a formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the human body which aids in the absorption and breakdown of fat. Because it is not animal-based, allergic reactions are not likely.

These injections are designed to remove moderate-to-severe convexity associated with a double chin. Kybella® is a safe, in-office treatment performed by Dr. Dreyfuss himself at our surgical facility conveniently located in Orland Park. Before the treatment, we apply an aesthetic cream if necessary. Then, using a special grid, Dr. Dreyfuss will carefully draw the boundaries for the injections on the treatment area.

Next, he will use the grid marked on your chin as a guide to deliver the fat reducing injections with precision. The procedure is straightforward and simple, taking about 20 minutes to complete.

Kybella® destroys the underlying fat cells under the jawline to remove your double chin. Once destroyed these fat cells do not return or regenerate. They are gone and gone for good. Although weight gain can increase the size, it will never alter the contour.
